SALTROCK was established in 1988 by a pair of surf-obsessed brothers. The two brothers travelled all the way to London in search of surf. After telling the ticket agent, “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” they boarded the next train to the seaside.
Angus and Ross, two painters, were having a fantastic time in Cornwall but rapidly ran out of cash. T-shirts with original surf-inspired designs were printed and sold out of the trunk of an Austin Allegro using a printing screen made from scraps they begged, borrowed, and salvaged, and a blackout system made from tape, nails, and a Salvation Army rug. The owners of the new company chose the name Saltrock in honour of their favourite surf break in their home country of South Africa.
The concepts soared. The brothers’ aesthetic was so distinctive and eye-catching that it garnered a loyal following among surfers in the south and west, and eventually demand exceeded supply.
They have remained loyal to their Devon workshop, where they produce surf-inspired designs with a powerful sense of individuality.
Their original creations are based on the values they hold most dear. Customers still wearing their original Saltrock apparel is a testament to the brand’s long-lasting quality and classic design.
