Do bike rims make a difference?
A road bike’s overall width increases proportionately with increasing internal rim width. There are a number of other benefits to be gained from this, in addition to the improved aerodynamics. An advantage in terms of aerodynamics can be provided by a rim with a wider tread. Also, the rolling resistance of a wider tyre is lower than the rolling resistance of a narrower tyre.

The EX 511 takes the performance that DT Swiss has achieved in the past and applies it to the development of rims that are suitable for enduro racing. The new EX 511 weighs 45 grammes more than the XM 481, but it has the same 30mm internal width as the XM 481. It was made to withstand the abuse of all-mountain and Enduro racing, so it has a higher weight.
