Understanding Oxfam: Mission, Values, and Impact
Oxfam is a community of people who want a better world – one where everyone, everywhere, can live free from poverty and injustice. They do not think that poverty is an incurable disease that can only be managed but rather defeated by combating the vices that cause poverty.
Oxfam is an international organization of people who are committed to the cause of eliminating poverty in the world. And they will not stop until they achieve the goal that has been set. Their supporters help Oxfam to carry out some of its essential work with some of the world’s poorest people. As they say, they can’t do it without you.
Oxfam in Action: Transforming Lives and Fighting Inequality
At Oxfam, the goal is not just to ‘do good’ but to challenge the systems that lead to vulnerability and build the capacity to resist it. Using unique approaches and community-based initiatives, they address the issues of poverty and inequality, and foster sustainable change. Oxfam’s work ranges from disaster response to campaigns for better trade and just economies, gender justice, and human rights, to helping communities thrive. Come and be part of them in their mission to fight for the oppressed and vulnerable in the society and bring change to those who are less fortunate.
POVERTY AND INEQUALITY
The polluters are making their massive profits while the impoverished folks are the ones who pay the premium. This is climate inequality. They are convinced that climate justice is possible. The polluters pay principle means that if the biggest polluters (like the wealthiest countries, big corporations and the super rich) pay for their climate-wrecking behaviour, they can get the money they need to address the devastating impacts of the climate crisis urgently. The money is there and the time to act is now. Let’s go beyond the concept that there is no enough for everyone and that the poor will always be with them. You can campaign with them and with climate activists all around the world for change.
TACKLING CLIMATE CHANGE
Cyclones are tearing through houses and lives with a vengeance. And it’s affecting the communities who have contributed the least to the climate crisis in the first place. Disaster response is quick with the help of the partners and they fight the impacts of disasters such as floods and drought to prevent loss of lives. ideas such as the development of special seeds that can withstand drought, stronger houses and education on how to cultivate new crops means the worst affected by the effects of climate change can continue living, working and learning regardless of the conditions in the future.
WOMEN’S RIGHTS AND GENDER JUSTICE
Women are at the helm of affairs. As Magda in Indonesia who believes that women should use power to counter the worst effects of the climate change.Or Rowena in the Phillippines. She and her community’s all-women disaster committee are replanting the forest to avoid such calamity brought by typhoons. And in Yemen, women-led organisations are demanding that Yemeni women be allowed to be part of the process when options for peace are being made.
In the aftermath of the recent earthquakes in Turkiye and Syria, the lead implementing partner was Oxfam KEDV – a women’s organisation with years of experience working with Syrian refugees and the host community. Because of their understanding of the other forms of hardship that women and girls go through during crisis, they ensure that gender justice is considered from the time of disaster response through to rebuilding.
EMERGENCIES
Gazans in the north of the strip have been living on an average of 245 calories a day since January due to the ongoing Israeli attack. About 300 thousand people are thought to remain there, unable to evacuate. The regime in Israel is starving the people of Gaza; the act is a clear indication that Israel is using starvation as a tool of war. The devastation that resulted from the Israeli airstrikes in the Al Remal neighbourhood in the middle of Gaza City during the fourth day of the escalation.
The Government of Israel has been bombing and shelling Palestinian civilians for the past seven months and has declared a ‘total war on Gaza’ – actively denying the people access to water, food, electricity, fuel and anything else they need to survive. Gazans are starving, dying and coming down with sicknesses.
