Zavvi is an online entertainment retailer that grew out of the now-defunct Zavvi entertainment retail network in the United Kingdom and Ireland, which was originally known as Virgin Megastores and which ceased operations in 2012. Zavvi is a subsidiary of the Virgin Group, which owns the Virgin Megastores brand. When Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin Group sold the online store Zavvi to a management buyout team in September 2007, it was a landmark transaction.
It was thrown into administration on December 24, 2008, after having grown to become the largest independent entertainment shop in the United Kingdom. In January 2009, the first store closures took occurred, with the final one taking place on February 20th, 2009.
The rights to the song were purchased by HMV. Following recent announcements, it has been revealed that the Zavvi chain of music stores will be absorbed into the HMV group.
