It may be difficult to stay up with fashion trends in 2022. The distinction between what was “in” and what was “out” used to fluctuate periodically or even annually. But these days, what’s hot could perhaps cool over the course of a few weeks.
Though some apparel categories cycle over more quickly than others. Consider the latest styles in jeans. Do you recall when Gen-Z deemed skinny jeans to be uncool? Yes, the beloved bottoms among millennials are making a comeback. And, based on data gathered by Dia & Co., they’re not the only vintage-inspired denim trend that’s making a comeback in our wardrobes.
The personal styling and plus-size clothes firm has been monitoring Google search data to determine which denim styles are now in popularity. The styles and silhouettes that consumers around the United States are looking for have been noted by researchers for the past year. They concluded that while each state has its preferences, so does America.
Ahead, we’re breaking down Dia & Co.’s takeaways, from what styles of jeans are trending across the country to which rise is actually on the rise.
The Trendiest Jeans Right Now
Dia & Co. reports that the three most popular fits for jeans are straight-leg, mom, and flare, while cargo, baggy, and bootcut designs are the most trendy in the United States. All of them share a casual, even sloppy, yet wildly exaggerated style. Comfort is still very important even in a society when a pandemic has occurred. (Ask Priyanka Chopra if you don’t believe me.)
Although the national trend toward denim that fits and flatters the user (rather than the other way around) persists, regional differences in shopping habits reveal a lot about what customers are looking for in their blue jeans. The data research performed by Dia & Co., for instance, reveals that the southern states prefer cargo and flares, which are more comfortable to wear in the hot weather. Western Americans love their bootcuts, while those on the West Coast tend to choose baggier cuts that project a more casual image.
Low-rise Isn’t For Everyone
In spite of widespread claims to the contrary, low-rise jeans are experiencing a (very sad) revival in only a small subset of American cities.
Analysis by Dia & Co. of available data shows that low-rise jeans are currently trending in the five states of New York, California, Maine, Arizona, and West Virginia. High-rise jeans are not just popular in New York City and Florida, but also in Vermont, South Dakota, and the nation’s capital. Mid-rise jeans (a personal favourite) are nevertheless being spotted in New York, New Jersey, Maine, Arizona, and West Virginia, despite the fact that it is usually the two extremes that generate news.
Light Washes Are Reigning Supreme
According to research by Dia & Co., the vast majority of Americans favour lighter washes of denim than darker ones. Brand research revealed, however, that consumers in the southern United States lean toward lighter washes, while those in coastal areas favour deeper shades.
Lastly, Jeans Aren’t The Only Denim In Demand
While jeans are a universal closet staple, America is interested in denim beyond the signature bottom.
Unsurprisingly, denim shorts are in demand as summer is still in swing, but in addition to the seasonal staple, shoppers are searching for denim-on-denim outfits, denim jackets (a must-have piece for summer-to-fall transitions), denim dresses, and denim overalls.
