About Saltrock
In 1988, two brothers who shared a passion for surfing founded SALTROCK. The two brothers went to London just to ride the waves there. With the instructions, “Take them to the nearest place there’s surf,” the group boarded the next train bound for the coast.
Two artists, Angus and Ross, were having a wonderful time in Cornwall until they ran out of money. They used a blackout system fashioned from tape, nails, and a Salvation Army rug, and a printing screen constructed from bits they begged, borrowed, and salvaged to print and sell T-shirts with original surf-inspired designs out of the trunk of an Austin Allegro. The founders of a new company in South Africa wanted to pay homage to their favorite surf spot by naming it Saltrock.
The ideas took off. The brothers’ aesthetic was so distinct and striking that it won over a dedicated fan base among southern and western surfers, leading to a shortage of the product.
They have stayed true to their Devon studio, where they create unique surf-inspired creations.
The principles they hold most dear inform their own works. The fact that Saltrock‘s original customer base is still rocking its vintage threads is proof of the brand’s commitment to quality and longevity.
