Paying Too Much Travel Insurance Review: What the Comparison Service Does Well

We review what Paying Too Much compares, where its specialist options help, and what to check before choosing a policy.

Travel insurance comparison sites promise to reduce the work of finding cover, but the useful question is more specific: does the service help you choose a policy that matches the trip, your health and the risks you actually face?

Our review looks at Paying Too Much as a comparison service, not as an insurer. The site presents several travel insurance routes, including one-trip, annual, cruise and winter sports cover, then directs shoppers toward quote-based options from providers.

This article contains affiliate links. If you buy through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you.

At a glance

  • Single Trip is for one holiday, with the brand citing potential savings of up to £98.09 for 10% of consumers in its stated research period.
  • Annual Multi-Trip covers trips under one 12-month policy, with a cited potential saving of up to £156.34 for 10% of consumers.
  • Cruise and Winter Sports are specialist routes, while medical-condition and age-focused pages broaden the comparison.
  • Pricing is quote-based, so the useful test is policy fit and exclusions, not a headline premium.

Those savings figures come from the brand’s description of online independent research by Consumer Intelligence conducted from 1 April to 30 June 2026. They are not guaranteed prices or savings for every shopper.

A comparison service with a practical scope

The strongest part of Paying Too Much is the breadth of the starting points. A visitor can begin with a Single Trip travel insurance quote for one holiday, or look at the Annual Multi-Trip option if several journeys are planned. The site also separates Cruise travel insurance and Winter Sports cover, which is useful because standard travel cover may not address the same risks.

This structure does not make the service a financial adviser. The site says its comparison is free, that it receives payment from an insurer when a customer buys, and that it does not set the price. That commercial model is worth understanding before a quote becomes a purchase.

The four routes are for different travellers

There is no universal winner here. The right page depends on how often you travel and what you will do once you arrive.

  • Single Trip: the clearest fit for one holiday in the next 12 months. The site says cancellation cover begins when the policy is bought, subject to the policy terms.
  • Annual Multi-Trip: worth comparing when you expect multiple holidays. The trade-off is checking trip-length limits and whether the annual policy matches every destination.
  • Cruise: relevant when a cruise itinerary includes ports of call and sea-specific risks. The destination details still need to be entered accurately.
  • Winter Sports: designed for skiing, snowboarding and related activities, with the site highlighting equipment, piste closures and avalanche or landslide scenarios.

For families, family travel insurance is another route to inspect. The comparison is most useful when the quote reflects every traveller, destination and planned activity rather than just the cheapest visible result.

Where the specialist focus adds value

Medical history is one of the areas where a broad comparison can be more useful than a generic search. Paying Too Much’s medical travel insurance pages explain that declared conditions can be matched with providers that consider them. The site specifically references conditions including diabetes, heart conditions and cancer history.

That is not a promise that every condition will be covered at the same price. Premiums can change with age, destination, trip length and medical details. The practical benefit is that the shopper is prompted to disclose relevant information before relying on a policy.

Medical details can affect both eligibility and price.

There is also a useful audience signal in the site’s pages for older travellers. A quote for pre-existing medical conditions or family cover will only be meaningful if the answers are complete and the policy wording is read carefully.

What the service does well, and what to watch

The research-led case for Paying Too Much is fairly clear. It puts several trip types in one journey, highlights specialist medical pathways, and gives shoppers a way to compare providers rather than approaching them one at a time.

  • Good range of starting points for single trips, annual cover, cruises and winter sports.
  • Useful medical focus for travellers who need to declare existing conditions.
  • Transparent comparison model: the service says it is paid by an insurer when a policy is bought.
  • Potential price value, but only as a research-based claim for a stated share of consumers, not a universal discount.

The limitations matter just as much. There are no fixed product prices on the pages reviewed, and policies come from providers with their own limits, exclusions and claims processes. The site says customers who bought on or after 8 October 2025 generally need to contact the insurer directly about changes or claims.

Before selecting an option, we would check the policy documents for medical declarations, cancellation reasons, baggage limits, activity restrictions, excesses and the maximum length of each trip. For winter sports, the site’s own guidance says some activities may be excluded or require specific conditions.

  1. Enter every destination and traveller accurately.
  2. Declare medical conditions honestly and review the resulting terms.
  3. Compare cover limits as well as the premium.
  4. Save the provider and claims contact details with the policy documents.

New policies may also come with a free 3GB eSIM and two months of NordVPN access until 30 November 2026, but the offer is subject to geographical restrictions and full terms and conditions. It should be treated as an extra, not a substitute for suitable cover.

Age and health can influence the quote, so accurate details matter.

Our verdict

Paying Too Much is worth comparing when you want one starting point for different travel scenarios, especially if your trip involves a cruise, winter sports or a declared medical condition. Its clearest strength is the way it organises choices before you reach the provider’s policy wording.

The honest limitation is that comparison does not remove the need to inspect the final policy. Prices are quote-based, savings are not guaranteed, and the insurer remains responsible for the cover and claims process. For a single holiday, start with Single Trip cover; for several journeys, compare Annual Multi-Trip, then judge the result on protection as well as cost.
